Kastli, Schaefer, Irvine earn opening night wins

Docekal begins title defense with victory

A strong field of 124 cars signed in for opening night action at Independence Motor Speedway. Although the temperature struggled to reach 50, the action was hot as 27 events were run in just over three hours.

In the I.M.C.A. late model division, a stellar field of 27 cars signed in. It was veteran Greg Kastli who set sail from his pole position start to pace the 20-car feature field. Kastli led the event in its entirety, but had to hold off the persistent challenges of Josh McGowan and Darren Ackerman to score the opening night win.

Outside front row starter Scott Hogan led the first half of the 20-lap I.M.C.A. modified main event. He was hounded by Joey Schaefer who eventually made the winning pass just past the midway point. Schaefer drove away from the field to score the victory ahead of Hogan and Brian Krall.

Defending I.M.C.A. hobby stock track champion Brian Irvine made a memorable debut in the I.M.C.A. stock car division. Irvine chased race leader Norman Chesmore for the first 11 laps of the 20-lap feature before taking over on the 12th circuit on his way to his first career victory in the division. Jarod Weepie made a late race charge to score second with Chesmore crossing the line in third.

Josh Steere survived a trio of caution flags to lead all 15 laps of the I.M.C.A. hobby stock feature to take the season opening win. He took the victory ahead of Shane Ebaugh and Pat Stansbery.

Defending B modified track champion Joe Docekal took command on the fourth lap of the 15-lap main event to begin his title defense in perfect fashion. Docekal scored the victory ahead of Kip Siems and Tony Olson.
