Luloffs make it a family night with a pair of victories

Ackerman takes late model checkers as Murty goes back-to-back
Sat, May 14, 2005 -- Saturday Night Points Race #4
Written by: Ryan Clark
Although the wind chill was nearing the freezing mark, racing went on as scheduled at Independence Motor Speedway. Jerry Luloff and his son Chris made the most of the night as the father and son picked up wins in their respective divisions.

Jerry Luloff sat on the pole as the 20-car I.M.C.A. modified field took the green flag. Following two quick yellows, Luloff powered into the lead while Vern Jackson and Joey Schaefer battled behind him. Jackson and Schaefer swapped second place a number of times, battling side-by-side right behind the race leader. As the checkers waved, Luloff crossed the line first, leading the event in its entirety, a car-length ahead of Jackson. Schaefer finished a car-length behind Jackson to take third.

Much like his father, Chris Luloff took command at the drop of the green in the 15-lap I.M.C.A. hobby stock main event. Luloff checked out on the field early to score the victory by a straightaway margin in the caution-free event. Vince Buchholz crossed the line in second and second-year driver Dan Olson finished third.

Greg Hunter was the early leader in the 25-lap I.M.C.A. late model feature. From his front row start, Hunter took command early while Dale Stolte and Drew Johnson fought behind him for second.

Darren Ackerman moved into a battle with the leaders from his fifth row start just a handful of laps into the event. Ackerman made his way around Stolte on lap eight and then went to work on Hunter. Just prior to the midway point, Ackerman took the lead and drove to the impressive win in a race that saw no yellow flags. Greg Kastli, who started 14th, worked his way through the field to steal second away from Hunter in the waning laps. Hunter crossed the line third.

Damon Murty became the first driver to make a return visit to victory lane this season as he topped the I.M.C.A. stock car feature. From his fourth row start, Murty worked his way into second on lap eight of the 20-lapper and set his sights on race leader Chris Wessner. Murty took command with just six laps to go to drive to his second straight victory at the speedway. Wessner finished second with Sean Johnson third.

Brett Root picked up his first win of the season in the B modified division. Root weathered a handful of caution periods to lead the time-shortened event in its entirety to score the victory. Joe Docekal finished second and took over the division’s points lead. Jimmy Broszeit made his first appearance at the track and went home with third place honors.
